Editorial Principles

Payments is not fintech. The distinction is the point.

Most coverage treats payments as a subsection of fintech. We treat it as a discipline in its own right. Here is why — and what that means for what we publish.

Fintech is broad. Payments is specific.

“Fintech” covers everything from lending apps to robo-advisers to crypto. It is a category of companies. Payments is something different: it is the infrastructure that moves money through economies, businesses and financial institutions. Rails, acceptance, acquiring, issuing, switching, settlement, real-time payments, regulation. It is less visible than a consumer app, and far more consequential.

We look beneath the interface

You buy coffee. You tap your card. Two seconds later it is done. Behind that moment sit the issuing bank, the acquiring bank, the card scheme, the switch, settlement, fraud controls, merchant onboarding, compliance and liquidity — dozens of organisations cooperating to make a two-second experience feel effortless. That is payments. And because it works so well, it has become almost invisible.

We write for the people who build and run that invisible infrastructure. That means looking past apps and interfaces to the systems, incentives and institutions that make commerce possible.

Why specialised coverage matters

General fintech coverage rewards what is new and visible. Payments rewards what is reliable and structural. The two need different questions. We are not interested in the launch announcement; we are interested in the economics, the rails, the regulation and the competitive shifts underneath it — the things that decide who wins the merchant, who carries the risk, and how money will move in five years.

What this means in practice

  • Intelligence over news. We explain how the market works, not just what happened this week.
  • Analysis over opinion. Our views are grounded in operating experience and evidence, and we show our reasoning.
  • Practitioner perspective. Written by someone who has operated inside acquiring and acceptance, for the people who do the same.
  • Independent by policy. Our research is funded, never directed — see the Editorial Independence Policy.
  • Africa first, South Africa first. We earn the right to broaden through depth, not assume it.

That is the worldview behind the name. It is why this is The Payments Brief, and not The Fintech Brief.
